Synopsis

Lesbos is the Greek island where Sappho, one of the most famous lyric poets of antiquity, lived. Until recently, it was also home to one of the most degrading refugee camps in Europe: the Moria camp. Ana Martins Marques chose this island as the setting for her long poem. In it, she juxtaposes fragments of Sappho’s work with the humanitarian and political drama of refugees in today’s world.

Ana Martins Marques's intelligent, sensitive, political, and beautiful poem returns to ancient Greece with attentive eyes and ears to the present. It composes a true palimpsest in which different times can be read simultaneously. The poems of Sappho, of which only fragments remain, serve as the foundation for De Uma a Outra Ilha (From One Island to Another), a reflection on the arbitrary and violent borders of the contemporary world. As Guilherme Gontijo Flores writes in his afterword, "Anyone can be seen as an island, not because they isolate themselves, but precisely because they interact from marine abysses." It is in this abyssal, insular space that Ana Martins Marques, one of the leading voices in contemporary poetry, operates in De Uma a Outra Ilha.
