of Mariana Salomão Carrara
Maria Carmem is the narrator of this book. An intelligent and lonely 11-year-old girl, going through “the worst age ever,” decides to write a book to recount “her year.” Between her often hostile school, turbulent home, and her family’s geriatric products store (or “old people’s store,” as she prefers to call it), Maria Carmem balances herself as best she can, seeking to understand the world around her, while observing an unusual transformation in her parents’ love life.
