Synopsis

One of Annie Ernaux’s most ambitious works, The Years follows six decades of the author’s life, portraying part of her generation, with a particular focus on France. The narrative unfolds through images captured over the years that simultaneously address Ernaux’s biography, cultural changes, and significant events from a broad time frame spanning the 1940s to the 2000s. In this impersonal autobiography, told sometimes in the first person plural and sometimes in the third person singular, we follow changes in customs, language, the role and perspectives of women, as well as her generation’s reactions to events such as World War II, May 1968, technological developments, the September 11 attacks, and many others.

Both poetic and political, this daring book uniquely fulfills the literary project that characterizes the work of Annie Ernaux, the 2022 Nobel Prize in Literature winner. By intertwining autobiographical narrative with the transformations that French society underwent between 1941 and 2006, "The Years" becomes a significant work, an inventive socio-autobiography that highlights the relationship between the personal and the collective, and between individual life and cultural demands. Produced by Supersônica in partnership with publisher Fósforo, this title continues the publication of Ernaux's works in audiobook format, masterfully read by actress Isabel Teixeira.

"The Years" was the only work by Ernaux—and one of the few not written in English—to appear on the New York Times’ 100 Best Books of the 21st Century.

Isabel Teixeira (São Paulo, 1973) is an actress, playwright, researcher and director who graduated from the University of São Paulo’s School of Dramatic Art. She won the Shell Award for Best Actress for Rainha(s), duas atrizes em busca de um coração (2008), which she co-wrote with Georgette Fadel and Cibele Forjaz. She played Maria Bruaca in Rede Globo’s soap opera Pantanal (2022).
