Graciliano Ramos

Graciliano Ramos de Oliveira was born on October 27, 1892, in the city of Quebrangulo, Alagoas. The son of merchants, Graciliano alternated his life between the Northeast and Rio de Janeiro, working in journalism and politics while developing his literary career. His first publications were chronicles in newspapers and magazines, for which he wrote under pseudonyms. As a politician, he wrote reports that stood out for their peculiar writing style, beyond the bureaucratic tone. In 1933, he published his first work, the novel Caetés. It was followed by São Bernardo (1934), Angústia (1935), Vidas secas (1938), Infância (1945), among others.
