of Anne Carson
Geryon is a sensitive boy, but also a winged red monster. In this autobiography, he recounts his life from the age of five. In his youth, after suffering sexual abuse from his older brother and having an affectionate but distant mother, Geryon falls in love with Heracles. Years later, on a trip to Argentina, he reunites with his former lover, and they both leave for Peru, accompanied by the young Ancash. In this novel in verse, which challenges gender boundaries, Anne Carson recreates, in the present day, the Greek myth of Geryon, a monster that Heracles—or Hercules, as he is also known—kills as part of his twelve labors.
