Synopsis

In this collection of short stories by Machado de Assis and organized by director Daniela Thomas, the attractions, passions and relationships between men and women are the main driving force behind narratives that unfold with grace and ingenuity. Faced with the abyss that is love, with its low-definition world, the characters rely on whatever they can: luck, ignorance, care and, sometimes, the darkest and most dangerous feelings of the soul and human desire. In his short stories, the author creates expectations, then turns them upside down. Passion is a discovery, an opening through which the universe is transformed. In the voice of Sandra Corveloni, winner for best actress at the Cannes Film Festival in 2008, we accompany characters who seem to wander between the stories, in this testimony to love as a life-affirming power.

Sandra Corveloni is an actress, director and theater teacher. She was a member of Grupo TAPA for ten years. In film, she acted in Linha de passe, by Daniela Thomas and Walter Salles (Best Actress Award at the Cannes Film Festival), among other feature films. In 2010, she founded Cia de Teatro (Cia D’Alma), where she is responsible for language research and direction.

author Machado de Assis

Machado de Assis (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 1839–1908) was a novelist, short story writer, playwright, poet and chronicler. The complexity of his work lies in the psychological characterization of his characters and his portrayal and criticism of the society of his time. He wrote The Posthumous Memoirs of Brás Cubas, Quincas Borba and Dom Casmurro, among other books.
