of Anderson Herzer
In this autobiographical book, Anderson Herzer, a young transgender man, recounts his troubled early years, his time in institutions such as Febem, the formation of his identity, and the bonds of love and friendship that he built over time. An author with little formal education, Herzer recounts his life with impressive mastery, creating a fluid and moving work. The book also includes a series of poems written by the author.
Shi (they/them, she/her) is an artist, producer, and researcher. A non-binary trans person, Shi’s research is informed by an interest in bodily experimentation, spanning cinema, theater, performance, literature, and music. Shi holds a Master’s degree in Semiotics and Communication Cultures and a Bachelor’s degree in Social Communication from UFRGS. They won acting awards for their debut as the lead in the film “Tinta Bruta” (2018) at the Rio de Janeiro International Film Festival (2018), the Guarani Brazilian Film Award (2019), and the For Rainbow Festival (2018). They participated in the soap opera “Elas por Elas” (2023), on Rede Globo, and recently starred in the film “O Mensageiro” (2024), by Lucia Murat. Shi is now working on the script and direction of their first feature film and is also in production on their debut music album.
Anderson Herzer was born in Rolândia, Paraná, in 1962. Orphaned as a child, he was raised by his aunt and uncle and had a turbulent youth, marked by stays at Febem, a juvenile detention center in São Paulo. During this period, Anderson began writing poems and autobiographical texts. Inside the institution, he experienced his first passions and recognized himself as a transgender man. He came to occupy a position of leadership among the inmates, confronting the vices and violence of the guards, inspectors, and, above all, the upper echelons of the Febem unit where he spent most of his time. With the support of Eduardo Suplicy, Anderson left the institution and began working in his office at Alesp. He died in 1982, before seeing his book, A Queda Para o Alto, published.
